To mark Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps(CRSwNP) Awareness Day on April24, 2025, the Vienna Airway Laboratoryis proud to launch a unique collaboration with internationally acclaimedmicroscopy artist Steve Gschmeissner.Known for his breathtaking scanning electron microscopy (SEM) work, Steve hashelped us bring the hidden world of the nasal epithelium to light—combiningscience with stunning visual artistry.

As part of this awarenessinitiative, Steve produced a series of powerful, high-resolution imagesillustrating the epithelial differencesbetween healthy nasal mucosa, inflamed mucosa in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS),and the remodeled tissue seen in CRSwNP. These striking visualsreveal the structural changes underlying disease development and help usexplain—in a new and accessible way—how inflammation transforms the upperairways.

These images are being presentedtoday for the first time on our website as part of our commitment to raise awareness, foster public engagement, andinspire conversation around CRSwNP, a chronic disease thatsignificantly impacts quality of life but is still under-recognized.

“We believe that art and science gohand in hand,” said the Vienna Airway Laboratory team. “Steve’s unique abilityto translate microscopic detail into visual impact helps make the invisiblevisible—not only for researchers and clinicians, but for everyone.”

We extend our sincere thanks to Steve Gschmeissner for hiscreativity, generosity, and partnership in this project. You can discover moreof his fascinating microscopy work on his official website:

We are honored to celebrate CRSwNPAwareness Day by blending scientific knowledge with artistic insight—and byhelping to visualize the challenges faced by those living with chronic airwaydiseases.
